Install your network card and cable if you haven’t already done so, being sure to follow the instructions provided by the card manufacturer. While a modem can be used to connect to a network, it is not the same as a network card and should not be plugged into the network jack in your room, it will not work.
Make sure the network cable is not a cross-over cable. If you need a network cable, you can purchase one at the Bay Tree Bookstore. Take into consideration the location of your computer so that you can determine the proper length for your cable.
It is extremely important that your copy of MS Windows be kept current. The easist way to do this is to turn on automatic updates. Step by step instructions on how to do that are available here. Failure to do so will leave your computer open to viruses and other problems.
Current antivirus software is required for Windows machines using the Residential Network. The University has purchased McAfee Virusscan software for all students, although if you wish you may use another antivirus program. Once you have an antivirus program installed, you must be sure to keep it up to date. If you do not know how to do this, or are unsure if your software is updating properly, please contact Resnet.
